The “Old Towne” District is unique through its development as the original village center of the City of Olive Branch, and is an object of special and substantial public interest due to its richness in tradition, charm, and character, imparting a distinctly quaint aspect to an otherwise new City, as well as serving as a visible reminder of the cultural and historic development of the City. It is deemed essential to the public welfare that these qualities relating to the Old Towne District be preserved and protected from destructive changes in use and the growth pressures evident within the area and throughout the community, which threaten its existence as a unique, cohesive, and definable whole.
It is the intent of the Design Review Advisory Committee to review all construction, reconstruction, alteration, rehabilitation, repair, moving or demolition of structures within the Old Towne District. The Committee will also review fences, signs, landscaping, or parking areas, both new construction or a change or alteration in the existing.

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission is a recommendatory body that is appointed by the Mayor and Board of Aldermen to review subdivisions, zoning amendments, planned unit developments and their associated project texts and development plans, site plans, and the City of Olive Branch Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Commission is also responsible for making recommendations to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen concerning possible amendments to the City of Olive Branch’s Zoning Ordinance.

Board of Adjustment is established with the powers and duties to authorize, in specific cases, such variance from the terms of the Zoning Ordinance of the City of Olive Branch as will not be contrary to the public interest, and where, owing to special conditions, a literal enforcement of the provisions of this Ordinance would, in an individual case, result in unnecessary hardship, provided the spirit of these regulations shall be observed, public safety and welfare secured, and substantial justice done. The Board also authorizes conditional use permits in accordance with the provisions of the Ordinance.

Design Review Advisory Committee is established with the powers and duties to recommend to the Board of Aldermen an ordinance setting forth minimum standards of design for adoption. The Committee shall review, on at least an annual basis, the operations and implementation of the City of Olive Branch Design Review Ordinance, and shall recommend to the Board of Aldermen any amendments to either the administrative sections of the Design Review Ordinance or to the minimum standards of design that they may deem necessary to enhance such operations and implementation.
The Committee shall provide counsel and advice to the Administrative Official on matters pertaining to community appearance and shall be responsible for such other tasks and activities as the Board of Aldermen may designate from time to time. The Committee shall be responsible for reviewing and approving, in the place of the Administrative Official, any applications for a Building Permit in which the use of steel or other metal is included as a major exterior design element.
